Charlotte artist,  Kent Youngstrom caused quite the stir this week when he and his family posted a hundred works of art with the same simple message – in hopes people would come take them home.

The Story Of A Not-So-Tortured Artist

QC Exclusive Magazine

CHARLOTTE, N.C. —

Being a professional artist takes a lot of work. From developing new and creative ideas to executing and then promoting them, the life of an artist is a constant challenge but if you want to succeed you’ve got to put yourself out there.  Kent Youngstrom, a full-time professional artist works hard and is the first to admit that he “got lucky, but also worked his [butt] off.”

He didn’t start out in life wanting to be an artist.  Youngstrom dreamt of being a professional baseball player.  Living in Chicago this seemed a natural choice of careers with the Chicago Cubs right in his backyard, but life decided otherwise.  He won a soccer scholarship to the University of Charleston and during one of his semesters while attending he signed up for an art class.  “I was scared to death.  I thought everyone would be Goth and wearing black, but it turned out the teacher was a normal dude.  The class was full of girls and me, says Youngstrom.

Kent Youngstrom – Profit from the power of surprise

Good Money with Derrick Kinney

CHICAGO, I.L. —

In today’s episode, Derrick Kinney interviews artist Kent Youngstrom as he discuses why he’s been known to hang 100s of pieces of art in cities across the nation, free for the taking to those who are fortunate enough to find them. Ken shares why being everything to everyone leads to failure, how you can profit from the power of surprise and never have to say “I should have.”

What you will learn:

Why deciding who you are grows confidence and purpose How routine helps you focus Recognize how to date who you can date Being in the middle means there’s always something bigger Why you should go paint the rock Giving back and giving forward

“Honestly, from the time I started to call myself an artist, things started to pick up with my business and just how I was doing in general.” – Kent Youngstrom “I try to be artistic, or I try to be surprising in everything I do. And, to be honest, sometimes it can get a little exhausting, but it’s really how I’ve sort of built what I do.” – Kent Youngstrom “The better I feel in shape or about that part of my routine or what I’m doing, the freer my mind is for other things.”

Love Shack

Camp Northend

CHARLOTTE, N.C. —The original guard house still stands at Camp North End’s Statesville Avenue entrance. In the spring of 2020, Charlotte transplant Kent Youngstrom was asked to transform the structure, bringing his blend of abstract painting and text art to an unusual—and complicated—canvas. He says he chose these bright hues and textures with the aim to draw attention to the entrance for those passing the site.

“Finding You Was Hard. Loving You Is Not.” is the most prominent phrase on the building. The words you see across his practice come from the artist’s everyday life, “from morning gym workout jokes, [and] from friends who say things just a little different that I capture, record, and spit back out as simple and piercingly as I can.”
